Drug abuse remains a challenge in SA
Unemployment and drug abuse remain the biggest challenges facing young people. This as Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha engaged residents of Emalahleni on service delivery issues.
Former inmates also raised concerns about challenges they face when looking for jobs.
Former inmate, Thandeka Mkhwanazi says, “My question to the minister is: What is [the] government doing to ensure that former offenders get jobs? I have been attending many of these Imbizo’s but there is no implementation.”
Department of Correctional Services committed to address some of the challenges raised.
It is working with other departments to ensure that young people are equipped with the necessary skills.
“We do not have a hole to ditch offenders, they are our people, hence we have different programmes aimed at creating jobs for people,” says Masutha.
The minister called on communities to embrace former inmates.
