Cops who assisted prison escapees back in court
News from SABC
Two police officials who are alleged to have assisted a prisoner escape from the police holding cells are expected to appear in the KaNyamazane Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Thursday morning.
Provincial police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says residents of Pienaar outside Mbombela handed over the suspect.
Mohlala says the suspect is accused of armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
He says police are still searching for the suspect.
Mohlala says: “The provincial commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga lieutenant General Advocate Mark Magadlela arrested two police officials, a warrant officer and a sergeant for the case of aiding a prisoner to escape.”
“What transpired is that the community of Pienaar just outside Nelspruit apprehended a suspect who was suspected of armed robbery and stealing of cellphones. They handed him over to the police at Pienaar but it was later discovered that, that particular suspect had escaped,” explains Mohlala.
