The 2016 school year gets underway on Wednesday. Hundreds of thousands of new learners across the country are expected to put on their uniforms for the first time.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi are expected to spend the morning with the learners and teachers in Daveyton in Ekurhuleni.

They will be officially opening the Chief Albert Luthuli Primary School.

Lesufi describes the facility as a school of the future, “These are the kind of schools we are going to build from now on. Full with a playing field, community hall, nutrition centres, beautiful classrooms with ICT, Grade R blocks with showers in the classrooms. We are not attracting the best teachers to come into the township because they are scared and they are afraid of the infrastructure that is there, so we want to break that backbone.”
